Flower and plant care
To help your flowers look better and last longer , we suggest the following tips:
- Place the flowers in a vase which is about 1/2 to one-third the size of the
total arrangement. By doing this the flowers would be getting the support
they need from the vase. The shape of the vase is also important. For example, tall
cylindrical vases may be necessary for tall flowers such as gladiolus. The vase should
also hold adequate water in proportion to the quantity and size of the flowers. About
three to six inches of water is usually enough depending on the height and type of
flowers.
- The stems of flowers should be cut diagonally underwater with a sharp knife.
Cutting underwater decreases the chance of air getting into the stem. When this happens a
blockage occurs and water uptake is reduced. Generally, one to two inches should be cut
off the flower stem. This amount will vary depending on the flower variety and stem
length. . Also a diagonal cut means the stem has a wider surface from which water can
pass.
- Remove damaged foliage from flower stems . Also remove any
foliage that will end up below the waterline in the vase. Otherwise this foliage will
begin to rot and encourage bacterial growth in the water which will then block the flower
stems.
- Add a floral preservative to the warm water to make a preservative solution.
This will increase the life of fresh flowers by a few days. When using floral foam make
sure that you soak the foam in water containing a floral food solution. Make sure that the
foam fits the vase and leaves room for extra water.
- Cut the flower stems regularly and change the vase water every
two days to help the flowers look better and last longer.
- Keep your flowers and arrangements out of direct sunlight and windy places
as this will hasten evaporation.
- When placing the flowers in a vase make sure you cut the leaves which will
be under water otherwise these may form bacteria which will reduce the life
of the flowers.
- When you receive your flowers, keep them in a cool place until
you are ready to place them in a vase.
- Changing the water in your arrangement every two to three days
will also keep your flowers fresher longer.
- The life of roses can be extended by keeping them in a cool well it area.
Particularly in the summer make sure you place your roses in a cool location.
